The Garden

I walked out to the garden
To reap what I had sown
But I gained a great depression
For all the weeds were overgrown
I sat alone,
And all the earth was stone
As weasels and rainstorms and warriors waged against my home
The plow became an anchor
Fastened to my hand
But I was just a stranger
Sailing through uncharted lands
The field was an ocean
And I couldn’t stand
As riptides raged against my plans
I cannot garden without a pardon
From own weakness, I’m afraid
Seed can’t be planted if you won’t grant it,
‘til a foundation has been laid
What is this habit of nature and magic:
Making a mother’s womb out of clay?
This Resurrection is not an exception;
All things are growing day by day

New York

Past foundation, present wasteland
Brick confusion, slick illusion
Through tiled veins in tired rain,
Concrete corridors seem the same
This is the sour, sleepwalk greenback game
I think with all the neon sold
We paid the price of heart and soul
Faceless commerce turns the common city cold
And it sings lust and greed and things for me
Smoke breathing, people teeming
The busy grayscale heart is beating
My busy grayscale heart is bleeding
I befriend the sights and sounds
My skin encapsulates this town
I think with all the neon sold
We paid the price of heart and soul
Faceless commerce turns the common city cold
I’m captured by the lights and stores
My feet have known this street before
Mindless commerce turns my common city cold
And I sing lust and greed and things for me
I need a central part like Central Park
(New York looks like my heart)
Now i see lust and greed
replaced with green leaves on trees inside of me

There are cities that watch sunrises from television screens
There are people too broken to know what brokenness means
They are not far from me
There are mountains that my father and I should climb
But there’s a running river of bliss where I seem to lose the time
And beauty’s seldom found in me
Beauty is surrounding me
Why don’t we stop and settle down?
The sudden silence,
The silence makes a moving sound
A single taste of life for a dry and weary tongue
Something truer than any melody that could be sung
Oh the longings i’ve in me
The unearthed majesty
Why don’t we stop and settle down?
Now my head is,
My head is bowed, my hands are bound
There’s blood in your mouth; spit it out
There’s blood in your mouth don’t swallow the faults that you’ve found
Why don’t we stop and settle down?
Now my head is,
My head is bowed, my hands are bound
The shameful, the shameful ship has run aground
Why don’t we stop and settle down?

Man can be a machine
Man can get lost in little things
I wonder if wonder is a suit and tie
That takes too long to try on
'Cause people spend themselves
On schedules and swords
Until they’re bankrupt and cannot afford
To wonder, hey wonder
Come and change our clothes
Remind us what we don’t know
As I walk through,
I just don’t want to say,
“The deed is done”
I wanna become
Life is like a feast
A banquet of breath for every thief
But love, then love
Is a main course food
That humans seldom choose
As I taste truth,
I just don’t want to have
Answers up my sleeves
I wanna believe
As I walk through,
I just don’t want to say,
“The deed is done”
I wanna become

Hummingbird

Please don’t go away
Won’t you wait patiently?
Heaven is a hummingbird showing up to drink while you’re away
Am I longing for a sunset?
Am I longing for a kiss?
Am I longing for a holy hope that maybe don’t exist?
Heaven is a hummingbird on rainy days like this
